Knowledge

FlagPresentation1The curriculum is a college bound curriculum coupled with a military education model known as the Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps (JROTC). The JROTC curriculum is nationally standardized, focusing on areas such as leadership, citizenship, communications, and physical fitness.

The General Vessey Leadership Academy JROTC program is embedded in the Minnesota state graduation standards. Cadets are placed in their groups and taught by Individualized Learning Plans. Each cadet sets his/her own goals and works toward meeting graduation requirements.

Our curriculum is quite innovative. Cadets will need to demonstrate competency in all standards before graduation. The individualized approach coupled with self-discipline and high motivation allows students to complete the standards, while belonging to a stable group with many opportunities to learn the leadership skills that other schools cannot offer.

Discipline

The JROTC curriculum we offer is designed to develop discipline in mind and body, providing the structure which produces strong, upstanding citizens. Good critical thinkers have disciplined minds that achieve academic milestones by studying the core subjects and gaining experience in which to order knowledge. A strong, disciplined body is physically fit and ready for the challenges life offers from day to day. Our disciplinary system follows the military model and may not be for all students considering General Vessey Leadership Academy. Self-discipline is achieved by observing disciplined adults and practicing discipline in everything one does. Cadets will find that a disciplined life leads to success.

Leadership

The future needs well trained, disciplined leaders prepared to think critically in order to meet the challenges their future will present. Our cadets learn leadership by learning to follow. As the cadets gain greater experience and knowledge they will be asked to assume greater and greater responsibilities within the Corps of Cadets. The cadets eventually will serve in many of the staff officer positions in the JROTC program. So, by the time a cadet graduates, he or she will be well prepared to meet the challenges of tomorrow and lead our community in times of crisis.

Character

Good leaders are moral men and women. The Army character is built on Army values, which are loyalty, duty, respect, selfless service, honor, integrity and personal courage. All of these character traits are embodied in our namesake, General John W. Vessey, Jr., who serves as our example. Vessey Leadership Academy also instills the Golden Rule: "Do to others as you would have them do to you."
