VLA Take 2nd in Upper
Midwest Urban Challenge The Upper Midwest Urban Challenge
was a competition that included the results for three different competitions
hosted by the three participating schools. The other schools where Humboldt High
School in St. Paul and Minnesota Transitions in Minneapolis. Competitions
included a Quiz Bowl, orienteering, color guard, physical fitness events like
jeep pull, sprinting, hand grenade throw, and low crawl. All the schools had 12
cadets competing and had a great time with the first-year competitive events.

Students Participate in
Commemorative March
On Saturday, May 9th, a team of six Vessey cadets participated in the 11th annual
Bataan Memorial Commemorative Death March in Brainerd. The team
competed in the 10 mile, Military Light Division. During World War II,
Brainerd’s 34th Tank Company was federalized and combined with units
from Missouri and California to form the 194th Tank Battalion. Of the original 82 members of the company, 29 survived the Bataan Death
March and captivity. Three of the original 29 spent the day on Saturday, sharing
their stories with participants. |

Vessey Academy Hosts Its First Competition
This JROTC competition included teams from
Humboldt High School, Vessey and Minnesota Transition School (MTS). The event
took place on Saturday April 25th with the following events; Raider
Team: 8 person team competing in four events and Quiz Bowl: 4 person
team answering questions from military to scientific subjects. It was a great
event; All teams and instructors loved the format, Vessey Leadership Academy
won the Raider event and MTS won the Quiz bowl. The next competition is at MTS
in Minneapolis on May 16th! |

Students Clean Up the Neighborhood!
This Spring, Mrs.
Johnston's science students went
outside and collected trash all day for Earth Day. The students
went to parks and business areas all around the school. Teams of
students raced against each other to collect the most trash. The
recycling competition was won by the 4th hour human
biology class. They collected 46 pounds of recycling! The team
competition was won by Jake, Chris, James, Carl, and Matt! As a
school, we collected an amazing 220 pounds of trash! Good work
Vessey students! |

Vessey To Offer
Construction Internships
Vessey Academy has partnered with Apex Construction Management to offer
outstanding Junior & Senior students the opportunity to visit construction
sites and learn about the construction trades first hand.This type of
internship will provide students with a better understanding of the various
trades, the requirements for accessing these careers, and professional
contacts to support their post-secondary growth. Apex is a company that is
dedicated to the community and development of youth. |

Vessey Kicks Off Football Team VLA became the first charter school in Minnesota to offer tackle football! In its first season, VLA played four games, including a varsity contest against MSAD and JV contests against Blaine, North St. Paul, and Minnetonka. This year's team was made possible by the generous donations of equipment by area high schools and funding for uniforms by the United States Army!

VLA Student Amelia Ramos Scores A "5" on the GRAD Writing Test! Amelia, a freshman at VLA scored a "5" on the State GRAD Writing test. The test is administered by the state of Minnesota to assess student writing ability. Scoring a "5" puts her in the top 5% of students in Minnesota! Way to go Amelia!

Two Seniors Headed to University of Minnesota Chauncy Silva and Josh Cress, both graduating seniors at VLA have been admitted to attend the University of Minnesota in the Fall. Chauncy will be attending the College of Liberal Arts while Josh has been accepted in the prestigous School of Technology.
